What it's used for: Wrinkles, sun protection

How it works: Coenzyme Q10 or Ubiquinone is one of the body's natural antioxidants. As such, its main purpose is to help prevent oxidative stress. This is accomplished both in body tissues and in the skin. In the skin, the

main effect of ubiquinone is to prevent against damage from ultraviolet rays and pollution. As we age, we produce less of our own ubiquinone, and supplementing this may help to fight oxidative stress. In addition to its antioxidant effects, ubiquinone has been observed to increase the synthesis of hyaluronic acid which may help to improve fine lines and wrinkles.

Effectiveness: Coenzyme Q can be taken as a supplement orally and applied topically. Topical application allows a greater concentration in the skin than oral supplements alone. There have been several studies showing the adequate absoprtion of topically applied ubiquinone and its effects on both photoprotection and in the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles as well as the prevention of substances that contribute to the breakdown of collagen.

Where to find it: Coenzyme Q can be found in many topical products
