How it works: Soy isoflavones (genistein and daidzein) work as both antioxidants and by blocking certaing pathways that may contribute to the formation of various cancers. In addition, soy isoflavones have estrogen like

 

 

 

effects and have been shown to help treat symptoms of menopause including hot flashes and bone loss. Through these estrogen like effects, soy isoflavones have also been shown to increase collagen production and thickness of the skin. Soy products have also been shown to decrease pigmenation and to slow down hair gowth.

Effectiveness: Studies from Asia have shown the positive effects of soy isoflavones consumed in the diet in helping to reduce the risk of cancer as well as decreasing menopausal symptoms in women. Topically, soy isoflavones (mostly genistein) have been shown, in mice, to decrease the amount of damage resulting from ultraviolet radiation. Additional studies show the ability of soy products to protect against photoaging.
