What it's used for: Hair loss

How it works: The true mechanism of action of minoxidil in relation to hair growth is not known. It does not seem that its success comes from vasodilation or an anti-hormonal effect. Minoxidil however does increase the

duration of the hair's growth phase and gradually enlarges miniaturized hair follicles into mature terminal follicles (thick regular sized hairs).

Effectiveness: Topical minoxidil is to be used twice a day and comes in two strengths, 2% and 5%. The 2% is marketed to women and the 5% to men. There are several studies showing the effectiveness of topical minoxidil's effect to both stop current hair loss and to help with hair regrowth (including a study showing an increase in 30% total hair weight). Studies indicate that the 5% strenght is up to 45% more effective than the 2% strength. Treatment with minoxidil is a commitment and only works as long as the product is used continuously. Once stopping, the benefits are eventually lost. In addition, a single study has shown an increaed effectiveness of minoxidil when used in conjunction with topical tretinoin.

Where to find it: Rogaine and various generic products
