The Basics: Whenever there is an injury to the skin, whether it by an
accidental scrape or a planned surgery, the result is a scar. Different people heal differently, and those with darker skin tend to get more noticeable scars. In addition, different body parts heal differently with the face and scalp

typically healing very well, and the chest, back, and lower legs healing with more noticeable scars. At times, a scar may thicken and even grow outside of the original area of injury. This is what is known as a keloid. There are several treatments for keloids ranging from over the counter remedies to injections and surgical removal.

General advice:
Prevention: if you have a history of keloid formation, you should inform your doctors about this and consider avoiding any elective (non-medically necessary) surgeries. In addition, there have been some studies showing that the application of a prescription medication, Aldara, may decrease the chance of forming a keloid after surgery.
