The Basics: Hyperpigmentation can result from many causes. Sunlight can
 cause the formation of darker colored skin and blotchiness. In addition, conditions like melasma may results from hormonal causes forming hyperpigmented patches on the face. Areas of prior injury, surgery, pimples,

 

 

 

or any type of inflammation may also results in darker skin, and condition more specifically referred to as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. While often times this hyperpigmentation can resolve on its own, it can take a very long time and there are several products to help improve and expediate the process.

General advice:
Sun protection: Protecting yourself from the sun in extremely important when treating hyperpigmentation. The sun encourages the production of further pigment which can cause the condition to worsen as well as to reverse any benefit that is obtained by treatment. Other products: In addition to sun protection, there are many products available to help fade existing hyperpigmentation.

Key ingredients to look for:
Sunscreens: These should be used in any regimen that treats hyperpigmentation
Hydroquinone and Kojic acid: Helps to bleach existing hyperpigmentation
Retinol: Helps with skin turnover to lighten hyperpigmentation
Niacinamide: Has been shown to decrease the trasfer of pigment
Alpha and poly hydroxy acids: Helps to lighten skin through exfoliation
Vitamin C: Helps to inhibit the production of pigment
Kinerase: Helps decrease pigmentation while helping with fine lines
