The Basics: Age spots, or solar lentigos, present as scattered, light to dark
  brown, flat spots most commonly on the face, arms, hands, upper chest and back. These are brought out by the sun and unlike freckles, do not fade in the absence of sun exposure.

 

 

 


General advice:
Sun protection: The best way to treat age spots is to prevent them. Even if you have many age spots, protection and prevention of new spots is still the best first step. This is most successfully accomplished with sun protection.

Other products: In addition to sun protection, there are many products available to help fade existing age spots.

Key ingredients to look for:
Sunscreens: These should be used in any regimen that treats age spots
Hydroquinone and Kojic acid: Helps to bleach existing age spots
Retinol: Helps with skin turnover to lighten age spots
Niacinamide: Has been shown to decrease the trasfer of pigment
Alpha and poly hydroxy acids: Helps to lighten skin through exfoliation
Vitamin C: Helps to inhibit the production of pigment
Kinerase: Helps decrease pigment while helping with fine lines
