membranes from lipid peroxidation, it protects cells and mitochondria from oxidative damage.

Effectiveness: To date, idebenone has been used systemically (a pill by mouth) for treatment of various neurologic and liver diseases. Recently, idebenone has been formulated into a topical preparation. A recent poster presentation at the 2004 meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology showed that topical idebenone was able to reduce sun-burn cells (cells damaged by ultraviolet rays) by 38% which was among the strongest of the topical antioxidants. This in turn would lead to less photodamage and less photoaging, a decrease in fine lines, and smoother skin.
