What it's used for: Hyperpigmenation, Age spots

How it works: Hydroquinone is a bleaching agent designed to lighten skin color. Hydroquinone works through complex chemical processes to degrade melanin, tyrosinase, and phenol oxidases (all important factors in creating

skin pigmenation) thus decreasing the production of skin pigment.

Effectiveness: Hydroquinone is effective in lightening the skin and has been used for many years. It comes in many over the counter products in strengths up to 2%. Hydroquinone can also be prescribed in strengths up to 5%. Higher concentrations will lead to a more dramatic effect. In addition, hydroquinone is often combined with glycolic acid or tretinoin (Retin-a) to allow deeper penetration and greater effect. Hydroquinone is often used in conjuction with kojic acid, another skin lightening ingredient.

Where to find it: Hydroquinone can be found in many products including those by Murad, Neostrata, and MD Forte and by perscription in products including Tri-luma, Glyquin, Lustra, and Claripel.
