How it works: Benzoyl peroxide is a strong anti-bacterial agent that can be used topically to help with acne. It is bactericidal, meaning that it actually kills the bacteria (including P. acnes) that contributes to breakouts. In addition

 

 

 

to its antibacterial effects, benzoyl peroxide also has minor keratolytic effects which help to exfoliate the skin.

Effectiveness: Benzoyl peroxide is very effective as treatment for acne and many dermatologists recommend incorporating this into an acne regimen. In addition, recent studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide is one of the recommended ingredients to use as maintenance once acne is well controlled. Benzoyl peroxide comes in many different formulations (gels, cleansers, etc.) and is available in concentrations up to 10%. While some products containing benzoyl peroxide require a prescription, there are many formulations that can be obtained over the counter. Overall, benzoyl peroxide has been extensively studied and is a proven success in acne therapy.
