What it's used for: Brittle nails

How it works: Biotin is part of the B vitamin family. Biotin's main function is as a cofactor that helps in enzyme reactions which are central to the body's metabolism. Biotin is found in many of the foods that are consumed in a

regular diet. Though rare, biotin deficiency can lead to dry skin, brittle hair and nails, rashes, and many other problems including gastrointestinal problems and neurologic chagnes.

Effectiveness: Recent studies have shown that supplementing the diet with biotin can help strengthen nails. One study showed improvement in 91% of patients showing firmer and harder finger nails after 5 months of treatment with 2.5mg a day. Another study showed increased thickness in the nails of 25%. Overall, biotin is a safe supplement to take and is most effective at 2.5mg - 3mg a day. Biotin has been publicized to help with thinning hair, but there are no studies to date that have proven this.
