helping to deactivate a wide array of cell damaging free radicals in many body systems. It plays a crucial role in energy production and only works as an antioxidant when levels exceed those of the normal energy producing needs. These excess levels are usually obtained by supplementation. In addition, alpha lipoic acid works in conjunction with other antioxidants like vitamin C and vitamin E helping to "recycle" them and allowing them to work more efficiently.

Effectiveness: Alpha lipoic acid is used both as an oral supplement and as a topical cream. Oral supplementation has been used in an effort to help conditions ranging from diabetes to heart disease. In regards to skin care, a study of over 30 patients showed that twice daily use of a 5% alpha lipoic acid cream improved clincal signs of photoaging on facial skin after 12 weeks of twice daily use.

Where to find it: Topical alpha lipoic acid can be found in several products including those from EmerginC and Refine
